14 Best Free Websites to Live Sustainably (& Realistically)

We want to do our bit for the planet, but it can feel overwhelming when daily life takes over and you don’t even know where to start.

Well, start here! I brought together 14 websites to live more sustainably through small changes that make a big difference (because it's not about aiming for perfection or other unrealistic standards).

And the best part? They’re free, and as well as reducing your environmental footprint, they come with additional benefits too, like helping you save time or money

I divided them by category to make it easier for you to browse them and find the right websites and resources for you

Fashion - Best websites to shop or wear clothes mindfully

Project Cece

Yes, that’s us!

When my sister, our friend, and I tried to move away from fast fashion, years ago, we realised how difficult and time-consuming it was to find better alternatives. There were plenty of fabulous online stores, sure, but we had to properly scout for them.

So, we created Project Cece, a platform that works like a search engine for sustainable clothes: hundreds of fair trade brands in one place, with filters to simplify your choice

From Price to Materials and Labels like Vegan or Eco-Friendly, it’s now a breeze to find the right clothes and accessories for your style, budget, and ethos.

Whering

Often feeling like you have nothing to wear, even though you regularly find forgotten gems in the back of your closet?

This digital wardrobe app and online extension allows you to see all your clothes, “carry them” with you when you go shopping, pair up items in different ways to create new outfits, and save your favourite looks.

Instead of continuing to buy new pieces, it’ll be easier to get creative with what you already own, reducing waste and overconsumption while saving money.

The Clothing Loop (or other clothes swapping apps)

As well as supporting ethical brands, I believe in community fashion: thinking of clothes as something we can share while working towards the same mission.

That’s why I’ve been using (and loving) The Clothing Loop, a fantastic website to live more sustainably by swapping clothes with other people in your area.

Please note – It’s mostly in the Netherlands and mainland Europe. So, if you live elsewhere or can’t find a ‘loop’ in your area, don’t get discouraged: look for local clothes swapping apps.

Food & drink - Best websites to make more sustainable food choices

Too Good to Go

By the end of the day, restaurants, bakeries, and cafes often end up with unsold but perfectly good produce. Instead of binning it, lots of them are now offering it (discounted) on Too Good to Go.

So, you can help reduce food waste and get yourself some tasty treats for a fraction of the price.

Olio

Similar concept to ‘Too Good to Go’, but while it also includes options for surplus food from local businesses, it’s especially ideal as a neighbour-to-neighbour app.

You can find or offer free and discounted food (and other items too), reducing waste, saving money, and feeling connected to your community.

Vegan Huggs

If you’re already vegan, this recipe website to live more sustainably is going to be a godsend. If you’ve been trying to eat more plant-based food but struggling to find good and filling recipes that aren’t repetitive, it’ll surprise you.

They’re SO tasty that, looking back, I realised I hosted quite a few “accidentally vegan” dinner parties!

Refill

Stay hydrated without contributing to plastic waste: find nearby places to refill your water bottle when on the go.

Travel & transport - Best websites to travel more sustainably

Biking as a travel option to live more sustainably

Rome2Rio

Choosing public transport can obviously help you reduce your carbon footprint and, in many cases, save money (although… don’t get me started on how frustrating it is when trains are too expensive and, therefore, less appealing than planes!).

With this transport website to live more sustainably, you can find different options to plan your journey, from trains to ferries and coaches.

For example, there might be a crazy-cheap Flixbus taking you from one European country to its neighbouring one.

BikeMap

Biking is an even more eco-friendly option (we’re big fans of that, in the Netherlands) but it’s important to stay safe. So, this website helps you plan your bike rides properly.

Responsible Travel

When you want to go the extra mile (both literally and figuratively), how about a holiday that reduces your emissions or gives back to local communities?

From group holidays to volunteering and eco-friendly accommodations or community-focused options, this travel website helps you choose more ethical trips.

Lifestyle & other websites to live more sustainably

Forest

This app and extension got me through university: whenever you’re meant to focus on a task, you plant a virtual tree, and if you check your phone, it dies.

But this isn’t just an app to break free from your phone addiction and improve your focus!

Because they partner with Trees for the Future, you’ll get to contribute to real-life tree-planing projects, too

Impact Score

Every purchase makes a difference to people, animals, and the planet. This app and website to live more sustainably helps you decide whether or not it’s going to be a positive one.

Simply scan a product to see its impact score!

Energy Saving Trust

While it includes other sections too, I find this website particularly useful for its tips on making our homes more energy-efficient.

From one-off investments (like installing draught proofing) to small changes of habits (like choosing LED bulbs or aiming for 4-minute showers), you can reduce your environmental footprint and bills by quite a lot!

Ethical Consumer

This non-profit organisation has been helping people make more ethical choices since 1989, rating 40,000+ brands and products.

While you can choose to buy their magazine or opt for a paid subscription, I included it in this list of best free websites to live more sustainably because they offer plenty of guides, tips, and resources, too.
