Ethical Winter Capsule Wardrobe: Guide & Inspo
Forget about the latest fast fashion trends and low-quality synthetic jumpers.
If you want to make more sustainable clothing choices during the cold season (and beyond), building an ethical winter capsule wardrobe is the answer.
And fret not: you won’t be hibernating your style.
As well as having a kinder environmental footprint and supporting better brands, you’ll get to embrace self-expression, create outfits more easily, and even save money in the long run.
The right mindset before building your ethical winter capsule wardrobe
- Think beyond this winter – Give the cold shoulder to this season’s trends and the must-haves chosen by someone else. Build a timeless and exciting winter capsule wardrobe by focusing on pieces you will happily rewear for years
- And think beyond winter in general – You can easily wear most of the pieces in your ethical winter capsule wardrobe in autumn, too. Some others (like turtlenecks and jeans) might even be suitable for spring or a seasonless wardrobe
- Buy less, more mindfully – Prioritise winter clothes and accessories that:
- were made ethically by brands that care about both garment workers and the planet
- were made to last. For example, when I was looking for a Christmas present for my dad in De Mof (a beautiful store operating in Amsterdam since 1885), the sales assistant showed me the difference between their premium, durable cashmere jumpers—thicker and with more stitches—and the throwaway ones from your typical high street chains
- match your style, not winter trends that last less than November snow
- work well with each other and with the winter garments you already own, especially when it comes to layers. For example, it’s easier to pair up a patterned cardigan with monochrome turtlenecks and other tops
How to build an ethical winter capsule wardrobe that’ll keep you warm and looking stylish

- Get clear on your winter vision – It’s easy to get distracted by trends and snowball into another haul when we don’t know what we like. So, start there:
- Palette. Maybe you prefer a deep / dark winter capsule wardrobe, with neutrals like black, charcoal grey, dark blue, and white, jewel tones like deep emerald, burgundy, blackberry, and aubergine, and vibrant accents like carmine red and pine green. Perhaps you’re after a light winter capsule wardrobe with frosty and cool pastels (like ice blue or aqua, pearly pink, or lavender and soft violet) and striking accents like fuchsia, sapphire blue, and burgundy
- Patterns you like (unless you prefer monochrome pieces for a more minimalist winter capsule wardrobe)
- Overall style, which could be about a specific aesthetic (like dark academia) or vibes (like whimsical and girly)
- Consider your winter lifestyle – Do you work from home or an office? How do you commute? Are you an outdoor enthusiast already planning their next winter hike? This will mean prioritising different types of winter staples
- Start from your wardrobe – The most sustainable clothes are the ones you already own. So, go through everything, declutter your wardrobe while you’re at it (time to get rid of that itchy jumper and other winter pieces you always find excuses not to wear), and notice:
- what winter staples and garments you already have and like
- what you still need to buy to build a functional collection (I’ve put together an ethical winter capsule wardrobe checklist for you!) - Prioritise the best sustainable fabrics for winter – We don’t need another fast fashion jumper made in a sweatshop with polyester or pesticide-filled cotton. Instead, look for recycled or organic wool, recycled or organic cotton, linen (yes, you can totally wear linen in winter!), recycled synthetic fabrics (especially for outerwear), and ethical down
- Go all in on layers, and create new winter outfits using the same garments in different ways – Many fashion enthusiasts get discouraged in winter, resigning to looking all boxy and shapeless. In reality, when you get smart with layers, you’ll be just as stylish as in spring!
For example, you can wear the same turtleneck with a cardigan, quilted waistcoat, or underneath a crew-neck jumper… with corduroy trousers, dark jeans, or a woollen skirt, warm tights, and high boots
Ethical winter capsule wardrobe list: essentials and inspiration
You can easily use most of these sustainable winter essentials for a versatile autumn winter capsule wardrobe, but you might want to add some specific pieces.
Turtleneck
Perfect on its own or as a versatile base to create all kinds of winter outfits by adding layers, especially patterned ones.
Knitted jumper
Cosiest winter essential EVER! And with its classic and timeless feel, it’s ideal for an ethical winter capsule wardrobe.
Pullover
Wear it on its own, underneath a cardigan, or over a turtleneck or shirt.
Basically, a lighter, less chunky pullover jumper adds an extra layer of versatility (pun intended).
Cardigan
Another versatile winter capsule wardrobe idea and a staple for layering, your cardigan will complement your turtlenecks, jumpers, shirts, and blouses. It might even go well with some dresses!
Tailored trousers
Look for sustainable wool, corduroy, or heavyweight cotton.
If you mostly own monochrome tops, get creative with a pair of patterned trousers (or vice versa).
Dark jeans
While jeans work all year round, dark ones are especially ideal for autumn winter capsule wardrobes and smart casual looks.
Long winter coat
Does anyone else feel instantly classy as soon as they wrap themselves in one?
By leaving the front open (if it’s not too cold), you can even treat it as an additional layer while showcasing the rest of your outfit.
Shorter jacket
It’s also handy to have a shorter jacket that allows you to move around more freely.
Winter shoes and boots
I especially recommend versatile trainers you can wear all year round and warm, waterproof boots.
Winter accessories: scarf, hat, and gloves
A must to stay warm and an opportunity to be super stylish!
Why not look for accent colours that complement your dark or light winter capsule wardrobe palette?
Other winter clothes you might want to consider:
- Long-sleeve dress, especially made of wool
- Long-sleeve button-up to wear on its own during milder days or with cardigans, jumpers, or turtlenecks
- Leggings or woollen tights to wear your favourite skirts and dresses in winter, too
- Bodywarmer for more layered outfits and crisp winter walks
- Warmer pyjamas and loungewear, especially if you work from home
- Raincoat for particularly wet climates
