7 Positive Changes When You Quit Fast Fashion (Worth It!)

Quitting fast fashion can seem hard at first, but trust us: it’ll get easier and easier.

The best part? As well as making a difference for garment workers and the planet, you will experience some positive changes, too.

Here are some of our favourites—and we bet you will find them just as inspiring and energising.

1. You’ll unlock and embrace your own signature style

Fast fashion keeps churning out new clothes to follow the ephemeral trends dictated by the catwalk.

Sadly, the old four seasons are also out: 52 micro-seasons have been in for years, and many brands release thousands of items every week.

This pushes consumers to change their wardrobe regularly, buying random clothes on an impulse.

Instead, when you quit fast fashion, you’ll get to find a style that makes you happy.

Not only will this make it easier to stick to fewer garments: it’ll allow you to fully express yourself rather than just buy what’s popular.

2. You’ll break free from the vicious cycle of needing new clothes to be happy

Shopping fast fashion has been affecting your brain

Your pleasure centre gets activated whenever you see clothes and items you want. The lower the price, the maximum pleasure you get… for now.

Then, your shiny new garment becomes “just another item in your wardrobe”.

So, you start chasing another dopamine hit. And another one again.

But once you quit fast fashion, your clothes will make you happy whenever you (re)wear them.

3. You’ll save money in the long run

Sustainable clothes tend to cost more because they’re made by garment workers who are paid fair wages, using the most eco-friendly materials and processes.

Still, because of fast fashion, people spend £526.50 on clothing every year… but only wear each item 7 times!

When you break free from that vicious cycle, you can invest in fewer but higher-quality garments that are actually made to last (yes, planned obsolescence is a thing in fast fashion).

4. You’ll feel aligned with your ethos

Once you declutter your wardrobe sustainably and start buying your clothes more consciously… it’ll feel good. Seriously!

You’ll be inspired and proud whenever you gaze at your wardrobe and wear garments that were made ethically and in a more eco-friendly way.

5. You’ll become even more creative

Has fast fashion been making you feel like you can’t wear the same garment two days in a row—or for more than one Instagram post?

After switching to fewer but more ethical clothes, you’ll learn to repurpose them to unlock new outfit combinations.

We’re confident you’ll even come up with the most creative Halloween costumes, like using your existing clothes and a hanger stuck in a cup to dress up as Hook (we may or may not have done this ourselves).

6. You’ll open your eyes to more sustainable options (beyond your wardrobe)

Of course, nobody is perfect, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

Still, quitting fast fashion will certainly help you notice more simple swaps you can make, from carrying a reusable bottle to cooking seasonal recipes.

As well as wearing ethical clothes, you'll be inspired to embrace a more eco-friendly lifestyle and leave a greener footprint overall.

7. You’ll find your tribe

No, we’re not saying you should stop hanging out with friends who still buy fast fashion!

But once you start wearing and talking about sustainable fashion, here's what will happen naturally: whether that's on social media or through real life conversations, you’ll finally attract and connect with more like-minded consumers.

You could even try some sustainable challenges together, swap clothes, and share useful resources.

Basically, quitting fast fashion can feel hard at first… but don’t you think these positive changes make it all worth it?

Plus, it really doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think. In fact, you can find and filter ethical clothes from hundreds of fairtrade brands right here on Project Cece.
