Finding Your Sustainable Fashion Community Offline: 4 Ideas

Finding a sustainable fashion community in real life will energise and motivate you.

For years, when I started embracing slow fashion, I consumed relevant content and interacted with like-minded people online. But when I was hanging out with friends and family in real life? There was a massive disconnect.

Aside from a few exceptions (like my sister, fellow co-founder of this ethical clothing platform), they just didn’t seem to care as much as I did, or they bragged about their latest fast fashion hauls.

Super frustrating.

Are you in a similar situation and keen to meet people who also care about the planet and are passionate about ethical clothing? Then, here’s how you can find your sustainable fashion community offline.

Why look for a sustainable fashion community offline, specifically?

Have a think: over the past few years, where and how have you been learning about slow fashion and having relevant conversations?

I bet it’s mostly online and especially on social media.

And don’t get me wrong: it’s great that we have access to so many free resources, nowadays! But at the same time:

  • If you genuinely care about the planet and sustainable fashion but, once you put down your phone, you never get to talk about it? It can feel alienating
  • It can be overwhelming to try to keep up with this conversation on social media, especially when you’re bombarded with conflicting information or messages
  • Endless ads, the pressure to be always switched on, sneaky algorithms manipulating how we feel (especially about ourselves)... Lots of people have been experiencing “digital fatigue”. For example, in 2026, many decided to go analogue, be more present, and actively seek in-real-life experiences. Finding your sustainable fashion community offline can tap into that!
  • As humans, we are wired to connect with those sharing our values and beliefs, and it’s rewarding to interact with them in real life, not just behind a screen
  • It’s even more important to feel connected and have a shared mission during challenging and uncertain times. *vaguely gesturing at the world around us feeling on fire*

4 ways to find your sustainable fashion community offline

As well as things I did (or keep doing) myself, I’ve tried to include something for everyone.

For example, some tips to find your sustainable fashion community require more initiative and active socialising. Extroverts will probably love them. If you’re an introvert, they might feel like a nightmare.

So, while it’s also important to step outside our comfort zone, you don’t have to force yourself to try everything: start with what speaks to you.

1. Attend talks, clothing swap parties, and other events offered by brands and organisations

Sustainable fashion community clothing swap party

One of the easiest ways to end up in a room full of ethical fashion enthusiasts!

For example, I’ve enjoyed a wine-tasting event through Floria Collective, clothing swap parties by MUD Jeans, and mending sessions with Kuyichi.

Annoyingly, fast fashion brands are now capitalising on this desire for in-person connection. You can still find ‘good’ events too, though. How?

  • Use platforms like Meetup and Eventbrite – Easy: look for upcoming ethical fashion events near you
  • Stay in the loop with your favourite brands – Especially the ones based in your country: follow them or subscribe to their newsletters. Same with relevant organisations and platforms, like Tex.tracer and Oxfam Novib
  • Check local cultural hubs – For example, here in Amsterdam we have Pakhuis de Zwijger and De Balie. Once again, subscribe to their newsletters (or pop in and have a chat with the staff!) to be notified when they have events on sustainable fashion. If you’re super driven and organised, you could also identify journalists who work on topics you’re interested in: any panel discussions coming up?
  • Keep your eyes peeled, when out and about – Your local cafe might be planning a clothing swap event. Or there might be an upcycling workshop in town!

2. Attend a repair cafe or similar initiatives

In these free community meeting places, you can bring broken items (including clothes) and fix them with the help of expert volunteers. So, you’re bound to find people who care about reducing waste and making more eco-friendly choices.

  • Repair Café has an official network, so… who knows: there might be one in your city!
  • If there isn’t, fret not: look for clothes repair workshops or similar events, like Fashion Revolution’s Mend in Public Day

3. Get involved with fashion activism

Are you so passionate about sustainable fashion that you feel a fire in your belly whenever you talk about it?

Then, a great way to make a difference and make friends is to volunteer or attend events, protests, and demonstrations organised by relevant organisations like Fashion Revolution and Clean Clothes Campaign.

4. Look for sustainable fashion communities and memberships in your area

As well as standalone events, you can find groups, services, apps, and communities that’ll keep you connected with like-minded consumers.

For example:

  • Peer-to-peer platforms like The Clothing Loop, to swap clothes with your neighbours by passing them on through a bag
  • Community-driven spaces and memberships like The Swap Club, with plenty of events and drop-in opportunities
  • Local Facebook groups

Finding your sustainable fashion community offline might involve stepping outside your comfort zone, but I promise: it’s going to be so worth it!

And wouldn’t it be more uncomfortable to keep being surrounded by people who think it’s cool to brag about their SHEIN hauls, anyway?
